Monuments of Murcia


Catedral de Murcia

It is the main temple of Murcia. It was consecrated in 1465 and suffered several additions  like the bell tower or specific reforms new chapels or facades  in the XVI and XVIIIs.

First was a Muslim mosque until it was Jaime I "the conquistador". 

This drove theMuslims from the mosque. The temple to be converted into a cathedral had to have anepiscopal palace so when the episcopal palace was created, the church became a cathedral, in the Cathedral of Murcia.

Cathedral uses it to many things: for weddings, to say Mass and also on the day of the Virgin Fuensanta take the Fuensanta of here and move to the mountain where is a chapel to worship him. This festival
is more or less at the middle of september



Teatro Romea

This is the main theatre of the city and one of the most important in our country. It was opened by Queen Isabel II in 1862 with representation from Ventura de la Vega.

He has been in works for four years and a half. there are many actions: comic, drama, mystery, children's magic ... And the prices vary between 15 and 30 euros.

Sometimes famous people come and do activities such as of next June "Escape" with famous actors like Amparo Larrañaga and Jose Luis Gil.

Circus Theatre is an annex to the Romea Theatre, which have been dug Romea theaterperformances while keeping works also is used to practice by the drama students.





La sardina

Miguel Llama is the author of the monument, the Sardine weighs 12 tons and is cast in bronze an silica and measures 23 meters. 

From his mouth comes a stream of water. It is located inside of the water of the Segura river.

This monument costs 500.000 euros. It is very famous in Murcia because in easter week there is a festival called "El entierro de la Sardina" where "the sardineros" through toys for children. 

And "the sardineros" go for a walk a sardine of cardboard. And after that they burn the sardine on the Segura river.




Museo Salcillo


It’s dedicated to the works by the Murcian Sculptor Francisco Salcillo. In 1962, It was declared a historic artistic monument.


It is located in San Agustin's square, near the Church of Our Father Jesus,which is also part of the museum. The steps of the procession emerging in the morning of Holy Thursday, consists of about 556 pieces that are the major works here are exhibited.El museum was built in 1941 and 1962 and was declared a Historic Artistic Monument . 


Since then, it has become one of the most visited museums in the region of Murcia and one of the most important ones. Its architecture is characterized by combining spaces contemporary and baroque (Church of Our Lord Jesus).

The museum consists of the following sections:
Museum's history,cofradia de Jesús 's history,audiovisual room, baroque workshop and sketches room,Belen's room and Jesus’ church.







La plaza de toros


It was designed by the architect Justo Millán Espinosa and inaugurated on september 1887. From the time of its construction  until the “monumentals” of Spain were built, it was the biggest bullring of Spain.


It is situated in Ronda Garay.It had its grand opening on September 6, 1887 and it was built by the architect Justo Millán. It has a byzantine and egyptian medievalism's style.

At the time of its inauguration the bullring of Ronda de Garay was considered  one of the bullring with more capacity in Spain .


Every year in the month of September is celebrated a fair  in this bullring ,with spanish famous bullfighters such as Pepin Liria, El Juli and El Cordobés.


In this bullring it is performed  a large number of concerts with important national and international singers.


There is also a pub called Musik ,which   is famous  because of the good music and the varied group of people who goes there.

  1. I must say that all your monuments sound amazing! I'm a fan of monuments and such and just reading about this made me want to go see these for myself. I like how the histories were included; they helped me to better understand how important they are.

    La Sardina looked very interesting. I have never heard nor have I see a monument of a fish actually in water. It impressed me and made me want to find out more about it.

  2. The architecture on the buildings in Murcia is a pleasant reminder of how beaitiful cities can be. I really wish I lived in a city like this so that I could just take walks to see all of the facades of the city. Architecture has always been something I've been interested in, and it seems Murcia has a lot of it!

  3. The Cathedral is so beautiful! I would give anything to have my wedding in that chapel. The sardine monument is also very neat, it is odd to me that the sardine means so much to the city of Murcia. It is like the bald eagle to America. The architecture in Spain is always so detailed. I would love to travel there just to see the buildings.
